Since people have tried the hair transplant treatment for hair loss, they have seen that this procedure delivers results. With a high success rate, more people are now opting for hair transplant to overcome their hair loss. Hair transplant is a restoration procedure which was first performed in 1939 in Japan. Over time this process was perfected and with the advances in technology, this is where it has led us.
Hair transplant is a process where a single graft of hair follicle is removed from one area and placed in the area where balding or thinning occurs. In simple words, hair is taken from the part where there is healthy growth and put in the area where there is no hair.
Before starting the treatment, the surgeon sterilizes the area from which the hair is taken. That part is made numb using local anaesthesia. The patient can also request to be sedated during the whole procedure.
Surgeons can perform two types of transplants:
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is also sometimes known as follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS). In this process, the hair follicles are extracted in a group of one to four hairs which is called as a Graft. The graft is taken usually from the back of the head of the patient. It is also called a Donor Area. Thousands of grafts are taken from the donor area and transplanted into the balding area in a single session. This maximizes the impact of the procedure.
Usually, when the procedure is performed, there are chances of appearance of a scar. This scar can appear in the donor area which is usually hidden. The transplanted hair is usually taken from the head of the patient but can also be taken from the pubic region. The procedure is completely safe and the patient can resume the normal working immediately after the surgery. It is advisable to get the procedure done from a trusted and experienced surgeon.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is similar to FUT, but the main difference lies in the technique. In this process, the hair follicles are transplanted one at a time. Therefore it becomes a tedious process for both the doctor and the patient. The hair follicles are extracted from the donor area by gently punching and making cuts around the hair follicle using microneedles and transplanted onto the thinning or balding area one by one. This usually takes longer than FUT to complete. Since extraction is carried out by punching the scalp, circular scars may originate which are visible even after the regrowth of hair. The hair can be taken from any part of the body where there is growth, like beard, moustache, chest, armpits etc. Just like FUT the patient can resume working quickly without any after effects.
